Writing a Resume for a Career Change
Many people decide to change career fields at some point in their lives. If you are planning on switching from one career field to another, you may be concerned about your resume. There are ways of writing a resume for a career change that can benefit you and help you land the job you want in your chosen field. The first step when it comes to writing your resume is to take some good notes. Your notes should detail your educational and work experience and list the skills you have.
Then, you can take your notes and put them into professional resume and cover letter format. Your cover letter is the first thing a potential employer will read and should be written in business letter format. In your cover letter, you should first express your interest in the job and outline why you are a good candidate. In the body of your cover letter, you should explain more about the pertinent skills and experience you have. In the last paragraph, you should include a call to action which invites the employer to contact you. Also, make reference to your enclosed resume.
Your resume should include your education and work history as it relates to the job you're trying to get. Even if your work is in an unrelated field, you may want to include it because you may have learned valuable skills. There are general skills and abilities that can translate from one career field to another. They may include computer experience, customer service experience, the ability to multitask, reliability and job flexibility, the ability to learn new skills, and more. The point is that you shouldn't feel bad about detailing your skills and abilities, even if they aren't in the same career field as the position you're applying for.
It may be difficult to best describe your abilities when writing a resume for a career change, but it's not impossible. In this situation you may decide to hire a professional resume writer who can present you in the best possible light. A professional knows how to take your education, experience and skills, and present them in such a way that shows you as a good candidate for the job you want, even if it is in a different field. If your resume gets you an interview, you can use that time to explain more about why you are changing career fields and why you are right for the job.
