The first impression an employer has of you is your resume, so you want to make sure it is the best it can be.

The type of paper you use is important. Choose a heavy, lightly textured resume paper in ivory, oyster or another light muted color. When printing your resume, use black ink. Your name should go on top and be larger than the rest of the text on the page. Under your name should be your contact information like address, telephone number and email address.

Margins should be one inch on all sides of the paper. Use an easy to read font like Verdana, Courier or Times New Roman. The last thing you want is an employer straining to read your resume or cover letter. When writing your cover letter, use business letter format. Your address goes on the upper left, then the recipient address, then the date, then the letter itself. Look at some examples of good cover letters before writing yours. Your resume should feature your education, experience and any special skills you have which relate to the job you are applying for, preferably in chronological order.
