Tips for Cover Letter Writing, Job Resume Hints and More

If you need tips for cover letter writing, job resume help and more, you're not alone. Many people feel overwhelmed by the prospect of writing a cover letter and resume. There are various reasons why you may not feel confident. Writing may not be your strongest suit. Or perhaps you just don't feel comfortable tooting your own horn, so to speak. Advertising yourself in a positive yet honest way is an important part of writing cover letters and resumes.

Your cover letter should be in business letter format. The first paragraph should be a brief introduction which states the position you are applying for, why you want the job, and why you think you should have it. In the next two paragraphs or so, talk more about the skills and qualities that you feel make you a good candidate. In the final paragraph, write a short summary which restates why you feel you are the right person for the job. Include a call to action which is a statement which persuades and invites further action. You might say something like, 'I look forward to speaking with you.'

When writing your resume, the best way to go is with a combined resume which contains both chronological and functional information. First comes your name and contact information at the top of the page. Next, you may want to include a job objective paragraph. After that, you want to list your education and work experience from present to past. After that, you can list your professional affiliations, any recognition you've received and of course, your skills. Even if you've mentioned your skills in your cover letter, mention them once more.

Finally, you'll want to include a page of references. Including references shows confidence and makes things easier for the employer. They don't have to ask you for references because you've already included them. Some employers may actually check references before deciding to interview an applicant, although most do this after the interview. Your cover letter, resume and references page should be printed in black ink on top quality resume paper.
